Respuesta Consortium

Colegas:

Una persona del Consortium respondió ya, a partir de ello hemos iniciado intercambio de mails, aquí transcribo aquí la conversación:

Dear Mr. Tapia –

Janice Lauer forwarded your request to me here at the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP). I am a graduate of the Purdue program and, indeed, Dr. Lauer, was my dissertation director. I am also involved in the Consortium of Doctoral Studies in Rhetoric.

This doctoral program in Rhetoric that you’re developing sounds very exciting. We developed our doctoral program in Rhetoric and Writing Studies here at UTEP four years ago and would be honored to collaborate with you in any way that we can. Also, I know that the consortium would also be happy to be involved.

What sort of information do you need?

Regards,
Helen Foster, Ph.D.
Associate Professor
Director of Rhetoric and Writing Studies
University of Texas El Paso

Dear Helen Foster

Thanks for your atention!. We are trying to develop a posgraduate program of rhetoric in a wide range, not only studing verbal language but the discourse of images, objects, spaces and so on. We need to see classical tradition but the new approaches too. And our focus will be in the ability to produce eloquent phenomena for rethorical situations, not only critical analysis.
In our fundamentation and exposition, we probabily confront other visions of the academic institutions. In this sense, we maybe need some support for organizations like the Consortium.
In the other hand, we would like know if you can comment our future curricula, recommend books and articles, and share pedagogical experiences in courses. Other question is look for proffesors interested in participate in our project. We think than in the US the rhetoric is a weel developed field of study, then we would like to take some formal articulation with your organization or programs. Are some of this purposes possible?
Well, thats the questions, please let me know your ideas at respect.
With regards,

Alejandro Tapia

Alejandro –

The consortium, itself, is mostly an organization that attempts to provide a forum for programs across the U.S. While rhetoric and composition is becoming better developed in the U.S., we still have problems to overcome regarding educating different institutions and granting agencies about who we are and what we do. Therefore, we have multiple “visibility” initiatives that we’re working on.

Many, many people in the U.S. continue to think of rhetoric in terms of classical rhetoric and/or in terms of critical analysis. While it does include that, what we’re beginning to call Rhetoric & Writing Studies (RWS) has become extremely diverse, with specialties in first-year writing courses, undergraduate majors in RWS, the rhetoric of science, postmodern rhetoric (I’m teaching a graduate course on this now), ESOL, professional writing, technical writing, visual rhetoric, rhetoric of technology, cultural studies rhetoric, a variety of literacies, etc.

What you will find, is that programs will generally have a particular focus, as it is difficult to cover all areas equally well when the number of faculty is limited.

We at UT El Paso would be happy to work with you in whatever way we can. I would also be happy to function as an intermediary between your university and programs in the U.S. in which you may be interested. What I suggest is that you visit the websites of various programs and peruse their program descriptions and course offerings.

Let me ask you this: are you primarily interested in graduate courses or are you also interested in undergraduate courses, too?

Helen

Saludos
